Needing an intervention...

Chairs. I just don't know what it is - I've always been crazy for them but now I am a full blown slut for them. Or maybe I just needed a fix while I wait for my new shell chair? Just picked up this little lovely over the weekend - it was being held captive at a stuffy antique mall and begged me to take her home. Never really a fan of the Tulip, but this little knockoff got my attention:

Changed my mind...

I decided to try a low-rod base [or cat's cradle] base for my new shell chair. Just bought one online on impulse [it's Christmas Eve day at work...who's working??]:

So it should look something like this [minus the giant turd]:

yay me...

I am finally getting a vintage Eames upholstered shell chair! And in super rare black!! Won it on ebay and appears to be in great shape. Doesn't come with a base, but as you know, someone won an Eiffel base recently for 99 cents. Merry Xmas to me!

Crabtree Building

One of my favorite buildings in downtown San Diego is the Crabtree Building. Designed by Robert Jones of Deems, Martin & Associates for Hodge Crabtree [read about his modern home here] and built in 1962. An award winning design in its day, the scale and balance of this building is stunning. Cantilevered over the main floor, the upper floors are encased in a beautiful meshwork of shade panels. The building is currently up for sale and I hope it will eventually receive the restoration it deserves.

Update 12/6/2012: Sad to report that since this beautiful building was sold, the entirety of the external meshwork has been removed. Although the building has been updated, what made it stand out from all other buildings in downtown San Diego has been compromised.

I spy...

Vintage DAXs?? With x-bases??? Perhaps...hard to tell, but I'm thinking they may be. Several of these chairs have been visible on the balconies of this senior housing building. Makes me think they came with the apartments?? Anyway, trying to come up with a plan on liberating them. Any ideas?

Saga of Poor Louis...

Well, here is the Kartell Louis Ghost chair I liberated from the dumpster [now known as Poor Louis] in two pieces. The entire back and one arm was broken off [in one piece] :

With a little effort and a f*ck load of patience, I was able to epoxy it back together. Not bad:

I did my best, but you can see where it cracked on the back. Maybe I'll do something design*sponge crafty to hide it, but he is certainly patio glam worthy... And the epoxy so far has passed my fat ass wiggle test. Now, if I were a dick, I would coax one of my drunk douchie friends to 'have a seat' and hope it broke again and they'd feel bad and replace it with a new one [in black perhaps?]. But I would never....

Poor Louis...

So, the restaurant by my place must have had a [wine]bar fight going on last night or something because I found one of their Louis Ghost's by the dumpster in 2 pieces. Of course, being a crafty sort, I grabbed it [big surprise] convinced I can salvage Poor Louis. I'm certain I can get him back together, but it won't be pretty. Could give me an opportunity to do something fun with it without getting any grief from anyone...

Triangle Building

San Diego has some very good modern architecture. The Triangle Building by Lloyd Russell is quite stunning. I live in downtown San Diego and there isn't a time when I am in the area that I don't stop to admire it...

Shamir Shah

One of my favorite designers is Shamir Shah. His organic modern sensibility is soothing.

All about hanging wall systems...but not quite obsessing yet...

Wall system from Atlas Industries. Of course mine will have to be the bastard DIY version...I used their 'build it' tool on their website - the layout below is about $10K. Yeah...no...
