Farewell...
This amazing mid century complex which is part of the County of San Diego's Department of Parks and Recreation [among others] is scheduled to be torn down next year. A new generic complex is being built nearby. This is a photo of 'Building 2'. I lost count after 14 buildings on the campus, but buildings 2 thru 8 are of the same style. Very sad... More pics

I know, I know...
It's Ikea, but I really love the size and lines of their $399 Sater sofa. And it just about follows my rule of 'can only be considered if it doesn't look too Ikea-ish'...

rant much?
So, I'm not a huge proponent of furniture knock-offs. More often than not they are cheaply made and disappointing - no rocket science there. I'm not a strict purist but I learned my lesson after purchasing overstock.com's version of the Eames molded plastic shell chair [called Ayers/set of 2 for about $200...don't do it]. But what do you do when the quality is better than the original?? Again, referring to the Eames Molded Plastic chair - this time from DWR. Ok, granted it is a 'sanctioned' item with the coveted Eames name attached to it, but does that truly warrant the $349 price tag? Perhaps, and there lies the dilemma, for me anyway [Even the Modernica version is the same price but truer to the original]. The quaility and construction were only marginally better than the overstock.com versions and that just blew me away[trust me - I went to DWR and scrutinized the floor models]. Is that worth approximately $250 more? Why I'm even posting this is because I found a knock-off of amazing quality at Plummers of all places [they call it the Bach fiberglass chair $190 and it is not on their site]. The quality of this version is just incredible. And I am a picky bitch...The gauge of the Eiffel base is much thicker than the DWR/Eames version and the shell itself is plastic covered fiberglass and very heavy/solid. So what did I do? Well, I returned the crap from overstock.com, did not buy the DWR/Eames model [although still coveting the Modernica version-just not in the budget right now] and bought the Plummers version. Why? It was just a better product for the money. Sure, it doesn't have the patina or pedigree of an original but I'm beginning to wonder if just because it says 'Eames' is it really better? I have to say in this case...no. Ok, I'm done.
